Previous Project Reflection
Heathen presented to me the recognition of the connections between my life and my work. The statement of ‘previous project reflection’ is somewhat untrue; the project is deeply rooted inside my existence and forms large parts of itself purely from this essence.
Drawing further inspiration from philosophers Soren Kierkegaard and Frederick Nietzsche who once wrote the life fulfilling theories of Existentialism.
This philosophical view encapsulates the individual, providing the basis that all emotions adjoined to the individual contribute largely as to how mentally secure they perceive themselves to be. There are many factors that interact with the individual being, how does one dictate what constitutes a fulfilling life? How does one achieve this quality of life? How does ones environment affect the self internally even considering the possible consequences of Gods existence or non-existence? As the outlook of the Existentialist is highly self orientated I would propose to start from this point. Somehow the comfort and freedom gained from this isolation blankets the internal and external influences, in an ideal world where this philosophy can be applied to each person the possible outcomes would be unfathomable, another reason why I want to persue this project.
The notion of survivalism has always been very close to me, I was taught from a young age how to look after myself if ever I was caught in a situation where I had to stay outdoors for long periods of time. My family have been gamekeepers for generations and so I feel that it is important to understand that if you are willing to eat something you must also be willing to kill it. This re-enforces my belief that we are all the results of evolution and not of a deity. I aim to encompass the two beliefs, my own and that of Kierkegaard, in the eyes of Christianity I am a Heathen. My chosen materials will reflect this, I aim to use animal bones, fur and feathers but only those which I have killed myself. In true survivalist spirit, nothing will be wasted and the flesh will be eaten. The raw aspects of the heathen against those of the smoothed Christian faith will be presented.
Drawing inspiration from Rachel Goodyear’s work, my own will have few ties to our reality and hold their own space in this solitary confinement, ignoring the social norm constraints that we conform to every day, to create a comfortable environment in which what we may call unusual behaviour. Ideas are withdrawn from little notions which we are accustomed to, their roots which are embedded inside us have appeared seemingly from nowhere but they fight for space in-between our day to day thoughts when we carry out even the simplest of tasks. Would you eat an apple seed if you thought it would grow in your gut?
As my work stands, until my ideas are furthered I will test them against the theories of Kierkegaard, when undergoing further research into Existentialism, I found that Christianity caused some controversy as to whether it could appear significant in an individuals life. Fellow German philosopher and psychologist Friedrich Nietzsche shared very similar ideals, although they held very little or no knowledge of eachother they both were considered to be Existentialists and condemned the church for its perversion of the Christian faith.
This Blogg contains updates on the progress of my Sculpture project at Huddersfield University. My artwork encompasses life as i observe it including death as a balance of my environment.

A new addition.
Those of you who know me will know that i have always possessed an admiration for insects especially bees (i'll take some pictures of my bee hive in progress) and beetles. They are profoundly effiecient at their jobs, i understand that despite i have this view, they are just trying to live like any other organisim, for whatever reason, whether its eating rotten wood or musley (hint hint).
On my travels, yet again, i came across an insect tank low and behold an idea fell from my right ear and into my purse. Damn. I have to say now, that thankfully i am not an impulsive person but after some bargainng (and pressing my femmenine charms against the glass...but we wont go into that, but i did get £20 off!) i took it home with me. After some time researching what little insect i could study i came across a website devoted to keepers of the praying mantis. Brilliant! They recommended an Indian flower Mantis for me as im a complete novis and would find the behaviour of other species too erratic. He arrived this morning, i know he's a he because of the wing stumps at the nape of his 'neck'. Not sure what to name him yet, names ae such funny things. I fed him his first meal this morning a fat green fly, he stalked it along the branch inside his cage and pounced in a flurry of limbs.

Theres nothing stranger than folk
Working in a traditional yorkshire pub, real ale of course! as you can imagine exposes you to all the local varieties that the yorksire spectrum has to offer. From the friendly drunkard and his pint of absynthe to the ladies of the night and their peach scnapps. On this occasion it was the Sunday crowd that pricked my ears, a lady that insists i must call her 'Auntie Brenda' was discussing with the landord his mother who was in a home. Landlord: 'But she just wont die!'
Auntie Brenda: 'She must have a strong heart'
Landlord: 'She has nothing to live for, ive told her that i dont mind her 'going' and that if she wants to see dad she should just get on with it'
Auntie Brenda: 'She must have a strong heart, and she wont die?'
Landlord: 'No, its not like she has anything left to live for, im going over there now to clip her fingernails'
This conversation went on for some time mostly with the discussion of nail clipping, on questioning his views on his mother dieing i was given the simple reply 'Young people DO NOT understand these things' This may or may not be true but i would quite like to try and understand but no one wil stop and even attempt to explain to me. Like a child heading towards a white wall with a black felt tip i am determined to fathom this one, litle do they know i already have.
Despite his peculiar wording there was love pottering about in the background behind the weary, tired look of empathy he felt for her. Somewhere along the line he had made the concious decision that her quality and contentment of life outweighed the relief that death would bring. Later after mulling the event over it dawned on me that the bonds people have (parent or not) ultimately can come down to a soft needle point, when you understand its time to let them go you can.
I cannot recal what started it all, how did i get in here?
The conciousness of my percieved reality is something that always perpetrates my regular fantasies (bring on those stinging nettles! oh dear) rather like someone who breaks into your home and leaves you a message in alphabetical fridge magnets. It is through these personal messages that i feel i can become more comfortable with my own exisence. As i have said prior to this that i do not belive in a diety or the flow of 'cosmic energy waves' (see scientology) controlling everything in the universe including what breakfast cerial i happen to eat for my tea instead of breakfast (Dorset museley incase you were wondering), i cannot accept that 'it' works that way, what i am beginning to realise however, is not only to trust my instincts but also to be very very wary that there is such a thing as denial, 'it wont happen to me' is fine but when it happens you feel shocked. What i am trying to say is that i have prhaps discovered the meaning of life. There is no answer to the great question (unless its museley) because mankind composed it. Life to me is as it happens and as the decisions i make. I admire people who can live their lives from a book, it is good that they have such fierce faith in something. But what about themselves? I have always felt that they see an afterlife as a cushion, to avoid the realisation of the dreaded abyss.
My realatives can forward my post to the abyss.
You only live once.
